Graduated at Last!!!!

My Graduation on Sherkin Island, West Cork.

At last, I have graduated!

My wishes at last fulfilled after many years of waiting for an opportunity to fully explore my creative ability. I must say it was everything I have imagined; family, friends and the weather even behaved for the weekend! I mention the weather because of the unique situation of the ceremony, taking place on Sherkin you are very much in the lap of the weather gods. To reach Sherkin Island you must use a ferry, it can rock and roll a little if the wind is strong.

We had VIPs from DIT to beat the band, looking so regal in their robes of many colours, also local councilors and TDs – it was all very exciting. A wonderful procession to the graduation hall with all my fabulous friends, the Class of 2016, the Sea to our left and the community hall on the right each of us smiling chatting so pleased to have finally achieved our Goal. Many hours of traveling though winter weather some coming from as far as Dublin, Killkenny and Tralee, others from the surrounding area of West Cork.

The speeches came next pats on the back for all, especially the people of Sherkin who made us feel at home on their lovely island, putting up with groups of excited students who only spoke of art while there. Many of the islanders could, I believe do this degree they hear so much chat from each group. The tutors were thanked for their support and patience supporting each of us to strive for our best.

Receiving my Degree certificates was for me the culmination of four years of hard work and a wonderful learning experience. The cap and gown was mine this time! I have watch both my daughter’s over the years at their respective graduations and wondered had my chance passed me by! The Sherkin DIT, BA in Visual Arts raised its head for me in the form of my daughter talking to a lady in work one day whom was doing the course, she thought – hang on this is made for my Mum! She emailed me and the rest is history as they say.

So now I am a BA Honours Graduate and the world is my oyster at 63, I can’t wait for the next challenge watch this space!!!!
